On World Mental Health Day we remember characters from different films who would not be the protagonists of their stories were it not for the fact that they did not cure their psychological state. From the problems of non-neurotypical people, to the failed and toxic relationships that would have ended in the first few minutes if, on the contrary, they had had a professional support network.

joker

Born as one of the most psychologically damaged characters in the DC Comics universe, the Joker is a perverted criminal who has had multiple interpretations in the cinema. But he is’joker’ by Joaquin Phoenix suffering from the mental health cut of Gotham. Arthur Fleck loses access to the pills that kept him sane and soon begins wreaking havoc and destruction across the city. Available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

The fight club

There are many in David Fincher’s work films that would not have existed their protagonists would have dealt with their mental health, as is the example of ‘Fight Club’, where Edward Norton’s unnamed character creates Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt, who together create a club where they invite several men to fight, as a form of therapy. Available on HBO Max.

Lost

As we said, in David Fincher’s films there are many such examples, and one of them is also the adaptation of ‘Lost’, a thriller that would have ended in the first 15 minutes if it weren’t for mental problems of the couple played by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. A marriage that seems happily married, but for lack of communication begins to crumble. Available on HBO Max.

black Swan

Darren Aronofsky is another of those directors who like mentally unstable characters, as is the case with Nina in ‘Black Swan’, a mentally challenged dancer who begins to lose her sense of reality when she begins her role in ‘The Lake de los cisnes’ being threatened by a partner willing to do anything to steal it. Available on Star +.

Doctor Strange 2

The reference to “Multiverse of Madness” wasn’t there just because it sounded good, but because Wanda, played by Elizabeth Olsen, has lost control and now wants her kids back no matter what it takes. She clearly needs therapy, because the trauma of losing her little ones twice would have prevented all the events of “Doctor Strange 2”. Available on Disney +.

Shutter Island

Martin Scorsese also dared to explore the mind of his protagonist Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘Shutter Island’, a thriller starring Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kinsley, Michelle Williams, among others. It is about a detective who investigates a killer in a remote island sanatorium, where he uncovers more clues about the crimes he has committed, however, the final revelation is why he is on this list.
