With films like The shape of water AND Crimson Peak, Guillermo del Toro he has built a career exploring the beauty in the darkness and the humanity within monsters.
His latest film, Frankensteincontinues that gothic tradition, but the director has already set his sights on another classic story of obsession and tragedy The Phantom of the Opera.
When asked which misunderstood villain he’d like to reimagine next, del Toro told Inverse:
“The Phantom of the Opera, because it’s a really classic story, but I would do it differently. I have a couple of ideas but for now I’ll stick to crime and stop-motion.”
Originally written by Gaston Leroux in 1910, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who haunts the Paris Opera House, obsessed with a young soprano named Christine. The story has been told countless times, from Universal’s 1925 silent classic to Andrew Lloyd Webberis the long-running stage musical of 1986 and even the infamous sequel Love never dies.
It’s not hard to imagine del Toro bringing this story to life as a new film. The story will suit the director’s style perfectly: lush, romantic and tinged with his characteristic empathy for the monstrous.
Before this project comes to fruition, however, del Toro is juggling many others. The “crime” he mentioned is probable Furya new violent thriller he is currently writing.
“I’m writing it right now, it’s called Fury, and he’s essentially going to do it again [the] a sort of thriller aspect of Nightmare Alley: very cruel, very violent. Like My Dinner with Andre but [with] killing people after each course.”
Besides that, he is returning to stop-motion animation after winning the Oscar Pinocchio collaboration with Netflix. In 2023, it was revealed that he was developing a Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation The buried giantwhich will be his second stop-motion film for the streamer.
Right now, fans can see del Toro’s Frankenstein in theaters before it arrives on Netflix on November 7.
