There are many horror movies that claim to be the scariest thing you’ve ever seen. But science has spoken and, according to a study, Left it stands above all others as the most terrifying film ever made. This is supported by cold, hard biometric data.
Directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written with C. Robert Cargillthis 2012 supernatural horror takes center stage Ethan Hawke as true crime writer Ellison Oswalt, a man desperate to recapture his former glory.
Then, he moves his family into a house where a brutal murder occurred, conveniently forgetting to mention that detail to his wife and children.
It doesn’t take long for things to go off the rails. Oswalt discovers a box of dusty Super 8 home movies in the attic, which turn out to be actual snuff films showing several families murdered in creatively disturbing ways.
One by one, he watches them unravel what becomes a much darker mystery tied to a sinister entity that thrives in the shadows.
From the opening scene alone, a grainy Super 8 film of a family hanging from a tree, the terror sets in and doesn’t subside. Apparently that disturbing sequence was so intense to film that a stuntman almost got seriously injured when the suspension system failed.
What really cements its reputation is the Science of Scare Project, a study conducted by broadbandchoices in the UK. The experiment involved monitoring the heart rates of 50 participants as they watched over 100 hours of horror films.
According to the data, Left was the film that raised viewers’ heart rates the most, going from a resting average of 65 BPM to a pulse-pounding 86 BPM.
Sure, it’s a serious jolt of fear. But I think they brought in participants who all get scared easily. Even though I like the movie Leftand I love horror movies, I didn’t think it was that scary.
I saw the movie recently on Hulu with my wife and teenage daughter, who were watching it for the first time, and while they thought it was a disturbing movie, it didn’t really scare them. I can’t say I agree with the science on this one.
Regardless, for many people who have seen it, the results are probably not surprising. The combination of grainy murder footage, eerie ambient noises, and the psychological decline of a man willing to risk his family for another best-selling book creates an unrelenting sense of unease.
One thing I love about the film is the slow, creeping horror of the story. I just haven’t lost any sleep over it. For me, the movie that scared me the most when I first saw it was Pet seminar. I saw this when I was a teenager and it blew my mind! I had trouble sleeping for months because of that movie!
If you have no experience Left however, you should check it out during Halloween season on Hulu!
What do you think? Left? Do you think it’s the scariest movie ever made?
