The Sony animated film nominated for an Oscar 2021 The Mitchells against the Machines it was a really well made film, fun and original, full of heart and great storytelling. Now Sony is teaming up with Netflix again to make the sequel and I’m really excited!
Guillermo Martinezwho served as head of story for the first Mitchells film, and JP Sans (co-director of The Bad Guys 2) signed on to direct, marking Martinez’s directorial debut. Wendy Molyneux AND Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (The Great North), known professionally as the Molyneux sisters, are writing the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in early 2026.
As with the original, Netflix will distribute the “Mitchells” sequel as part of a licensing deal with Sony; the studios are planning a more collaborative creative partnership for the second film.
The first film was originally scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures in 2020, after the title was changed to “Connected,” but following delays due to the COVID pandemic, Netflix picked up the film (under the original title) for over $100 million.
(Sony’s recent animated film KPop Demon Hunters came to Netflix under a separate production deal with the streamer; it’s now the most-watched Netflix movie ever, and the companies are in talks for a sequel.)
The Mitchells against the Machines follows the titular family as they accompany their eldest daughter, Katie (Abbi Jacobson), across the country, to film school in California. During the journey, a rogue AI called PAL (Olivia Colman) commands an army of robots to launch a worldwide rebellion against humanity.
It’s up to the Mitchells, including Katie’s technophobic father, Rick (Danny McBride), excessively sweet mother, Linda (Maya Rodolfo) and his hyperactive younger brother, Aaron (Mike Rianda) – to save the situation.
The film won widespread praise for its hand-painted animation style, won eight Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will produce through their Lord Miller banner, and Kurt Albrecht will produce for Sony Pictures Animation. Rianda, who co-wrote and directed the original, is an executive producer, alongside Lord Miller’s Aditya Sood.
There’s no information on the sequel’s story or casting news yet, but stay tuned and we’ll let you know.
