The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, and between theatrical releases and Disney+ series, there’s always something new to dive into, but few upcoming projects have as much anticipation as Avengers: Judgment Day.
With a huge cast and multiple superhero teams joining forces, this will be an epic new chapter in the MCU. A familiar face making its return is Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and the actor recently offered a look at where Clint Barton has been since fans last saw him.
In an interview with ComicBook, Renner shared an update on his character’s state of mind before the events of Judgment Day:
“I think he started out in retirement… but he’s always come out of retirement, you know. I think he’s a family man; you always know who he’s loyal to, and he’s always come out of retirement, man. Until he gets killed, he’ll always work.”
It makes sense that Hawkeye would try to enjoy a peaceful life again, but knowing his track record, that probably won’t last long.
After the emotional events of Hawkeye finale in 2021, Clint had more than earned himself some free time with his family. But as Renner teases, it doesn’t take much to get Barton back into the fight.
Clint Barton’s journey through the MCU has been an interesting one. Since its first appearance in 2011 Thor to stand alongside Earth’s mightiest heroes The Avengershe’s faced loss, redemption, and more than his share of heartbreak.
After surviving the Blip and helping mentor Kate Bishop, it makes sense that he would want to hang up his bow again… but heroes like Hawkeye never truly retire.
Renner’s return to the MCU is also inspiring on a personal level. After the near-fatal snowplow accident, which left him with dozens of broken bones, fans weren’t sure if they’d ever see him in action again.
His recovery has been truly remarkable and seeing him take on the role of Hawkeye once again feels like a victory in itself.
Details about Avengers: Judgment Day are being kept well under wraps, but with The Russo Bros. directing and the promise of major crossover moments between The Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four and X-Men, expectations are sky-high.
The multiverse is in chaos, and if Renner’s comments are any indication, Hawkeye will return to the fray at a critical moment.
Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how it all turns out. Avengers: Judgment Day will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
