THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Will Have a Dark Opening Scene Involving Sauron; Here Are the Details

Some new details regarding the opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2. These details were shared by Patrick McKay AND Mr. J.D. Payneand previews a dark flashback sequence involving Sauron.

During an interview with GamesRadar, McKay asked, “Do you want to hear the opening?” He then went on to share the opening of the series!

McKay said: “We open in the darkness, an orc comes in and we see that there are thousands of orcs gathered. He’s about to be crowned, he’s casting his vision of Middle-earth and, just before they put the crown on his head, his right-hand man, Adar, turns it upside down and stabs him in the back. It’s the murder of Sauron.”

This opening will set the tone for the new season, which is said to be “all about the bad guys.” I like that we’ll get to learn more about the history between Sauron (Charles Vickers) and Adar (Sam Hazeldine), as it is set at the end of the First Age, after Morgoth has been defeated and Sauron demands fealty from his followers.

McKay adds: “From the beginning, Sauron is the center of gravity. It’s an ensemble show, but the focus starts to shift toward him. He’s the one driving everything.”

It was previously revealed that the second season of the series will tell the story of the rise of Sauron, and McKay said: “If I had to choose one reason to make this series and set it in this era of mythology, it would be that.

“From minute one, we talked about Milton’s Paradise Lost, Walter White and Tony Soprano, and how Sauron has the potential to be like these great hero-villains, where hero means protagonist. This is the great story that’s not being told on the screen.”

In the first season of the series, Sauron prowls around under the guise of Halbrand, but after being discovered, he takes on a new identity: the elegant elf Annatar.

Speaking about his reinvention, McKay said: “He was hiding in our story. The opportunity now with season two is: the audience is in on the scam. We know who he is. We have a good idea of what he wants.

“The fun is watching other people get caught in the web. As the season unfolds, the plan begins. One hammer after another starts to fall until, in the last two episodes, you realize the level and the extent of how evil he is and how deeply he’s strategized this whole thing.”

McKay goes on to explain: “All of our stories are starting to become one story, and that one story is how Sauron’s resurgence affects everyone and threatens the entire world.”

Vickers also spoke about his character, saying: “I was so excited to get to this point in the story, because this is the canon of this time period. You have Sauron and Celebrimbor working together, creating rings.

“Everything Sauron does is to serve other people, to please someone else. In the same way that the whole Halbrand thing was for Galadriel, this new look is for Celebrimbor.

“This is the best way to make him do what he wants: create a bunch of rings that will dominate all the others.”

The series is set “thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Hobbit AND The Lord of the Ringsand will take viewers back to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest thread, and the greatest villain Tolkien had ever created threatened to plunge the entire world into darkness.

“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth.

“From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the Elven capital of Lindon, to the extraordinary island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that will live on long after they are gone.”

In season two, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or allies, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.

“Building on the epic scope and ambition of the first season, Amazon’s second season The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power immerses even its most beloved and vulnerable characters in a growing tide of darkness, challenging each of them to find their place in a world increasingly on the brink of destruction.

“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are tested and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good fight ever more bravely to hold on to what matters most to them… themselves.”

The series is developed by the showrunners Mr. J.D. Payne AND Patrick McKay. The Rings of Power Season 2 will debut on Prime Video on August 29.
