James Gunn he stepped into the conversation once again to defend the division Peacemaker Season 2 finale.
After a Threads fan asked if he’d seen all the negative reactions to the finale and the show itself, Gunn gave a characteristically honest response, writing:
“Definitely! Not everyone can love everything. I love the episode but I understand that not everyone loves it, which is absolutely fair.”
As you know, the Peacemaker The Season 2 finale didn’t go perfectly for everyone. In fact many fans seemed to hate it and on IMDb it has a low rating of 6.7/10, fans criticized the episode for its lack of big plot twists and speeding through key character arcs that many hoped would be explored more deeply.
But Gunn disagrees that there were no surprises. Responding to the same wave of online complaints, he wrote:
“I don’t understand that people don’t think there aren’t big reveals here, including Checkmate and Salvation.”
As Gunn has been teasing for months, the second season of Peacemaker was planned as a prequel to the upcoming 2027 DCU film The man of tomorrow. The finale’s introduction of Salvation, an alternate dimension that Rick Flag Sr. intends to use as a haven for Earth’s metahumans, sets up important story threads that will pay off later in the new DC Universe.
In a recent Q&A, Gunn explained that you don’t need to have watched Peacemaker to follow what is coming The man of tomorrow.
“I don’t expect people to go into Man of Tomorrow and know what Salvation is. You’ll find out everything you need to know about the demise of metahumans through that movie.”
So while some fans may have found the Peacemaker disappointing ending, Gunn clearly has a long game in mind for the direction the story is headed, and he liked what he did.
The next step for the DCU is Supergirlwhich hits theaters on June 26, 2026. Whether Peacemaker’s wild ending worked for you or not, Gunn is building to something much bigger and having a lot of fun doing it.
