There has been no news about this for a long time The Toxic Avenger remake, which features game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage. A teaser trailer for Red-Band was released almost a year ago and not long after, updates on the film stopped.
Today, World of Reel reports that director Macon Blair’s film is currently considered “unreleaseable.”
The site spoke to a producer of the film who told them that The Toxic AvengerThe commercial prospects of are too “out there” for any kind of traditional theatrical release. This would explain why the film does not yet have a confirmed distributor.
Now, there has been a fair amount of excitement surrounding The Toxic Avenger, and it has even received good reviews at film festival screenings. The film currently has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Here’s an excerpt from their report: “Director and producer Adam Masnyk recently took to Twitter/X and confirmed that the film has been deemed ‘not safe enough to release,’ which he said is why no one has stepped forward to distribute it. When all is said and done, it may even turn out to be a ‘lost medium.'”
The report added: “This is a fact. This is what we, I work in the film licensing industry, have also been told officially about this.”
When previously teasing violence in the film, the director had said it would include “Itchy and Scratchy-type violence,” which is obviously a reference to The Simpsonsintense comedy sketches where cat and mouse compete.
He explained: “We have a guy who gets his head stuck in a car engine and his head gets crushed. That was a gag I really liked.”
The over-the-top violence featured in this film has been teased since its initial announcement and will feature an exuberant amount of blood and gore.
During the making of the film, the director explained that he thought the studio would not accept his ideas: “I kept expecting Legendary to say, ‘This is not what we want,’ but they kept accepting my proposals.”
Blair adds that while making the film, he “embraced the silliness and trashiness, while still wanting it to be a fun, audience-pleasing rock ‘n’ roll moment.”
The film is described as a “fresh reimagining of Mr. LloydThe classic The Toxic Avenger”, and it is explained that “While the original film (premiered in 1984, nearly 40 years ago!) followed the fate of Melvin Ferd Junko III (Mitch Cohen), who goes from zero to toxic hero in a case of bullying gone wrong, Macon BlairThe contemporary version follows a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and uncanny strength.”
Dinklage plays “downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely reimagining is eye-wateringly immersed in environmental themes as Winston battles the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends and his community.”
The synopsis also notes: “While this story exists in its own way, the spirit remains unmistakably connected to the original. Troma fans, old and new, will be pleased to know that the film has been rated ‘R’ for violence and gore, in keeping with Troma tradition.”
The film also stars Elijah Wood, Julia Davis, Paige Taylor, your guide, Kevin BaconAND Jacob Tremblay.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens to this movie. I’m curious and hope to get around to watching it someday.
