The series was abruptly cancelled after its third season, paving the way for another huge streaming hit.
Netflix is increasingly pushing its own boundaries and offering its audience all kinds of collaborations with other, equally popular services – this time the streaming partnered with AMC+ and temporarily acquired the rights to show some of the channel’s projects.
Along with “A Discovery of Witches” and “Dark Winds,” the adventure series “In the Desert of Death” has also become available on Netflix; it was once created by Alfred Gough and Miles Miller, who later wrote the script for “Wednesday.”

Based on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West, Into the Desert of Death, which ran from 2015 to 2019, follows a warrior named Sunny as he guides a boy with unusual powers through the desert in hopes of finding enlightenment. The series delves into the martial arts theme that is characteristic of Chinese culture, especially given the time period in which all the action takes place—a dystopia in which all modern technology, including new types of weapons, has been irretrievably lost. Instead, heroes wield ordinary swords and crossbows, or simply use their own skills in battle.
‘In the Desert of Death’ came to an unexpected close for everyone when the series was renewed for a third season in 2019, and Gough and Miller never had time to bring all their ideas to the screen.
However, both writers soon found a new, potentially successful project: Tim Burton’s already popular series “Wednesday” starring Jenna Ortega.
