Shantaram was canceled from Apple TV+ after one season

EXCLUSIVE: The drama series of Apple TV+ Shantaram, starring Charlie Hunnam, will not return for a second season. The season one finale, which will be released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as the series finale.

Based on the 900+ page novel by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram was an ambitious, large-scale project filmed on two continents hit by the pandemic.

The series filmed two episodes before filming was halted at the end of February 2020. Due to its sprawling nature requiring filming in multiple countries, production of the remaining 10 episodes of the series did not resume until May 2021.

Shantaram, which hasn’t received as much attention as some popular Apple TV+ titles, follows Lin Ford (Hunnam) as he escapes from an Australian maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the 1980s Bombay slums, and becomes involved entangles Boss with a local mafia and ends up using his guns and fakes to fight against the invading Russian forces in Afghanistan. He falls in love with a mysterious and fascinating woman named Karla (Antonia Desplat) and must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it.

The series also stars Shubham Saraf, Elektra Kilbey, Fayssal Bazzi, Luke Pasqualino, Alyy Khan, Sujaya Dasgupta, Vincent Perez, David Field, Alexander Siddig, Gabrielle Scharnitzky, Elham Ehsas, Rachel Kamath, Matthew Joseph and Shiv Palekar.

Before Roberts’ book was greenlit as a series on Apple TV+, it was the subject of several failed attempts to turn it into a film franchise led by Johnny Depp.

That Shantaram The series was written and executive produced by showrunner Steve Lightfoot. Bharat Nalluri directed and was executive producer. Andrea Barron, Nicole Clemens, Steve Golin, Justin Kurzel and Eric Warren Singer, who developed the series with Lightfoot, are also executive producers. The series is produced by Anonymous Content for Apple through Paramount Television Studios and AC Studios.
