In the Maldives, it is illegal for anyone born after January 1, 2007 to buy or use tobacco, with the aim of “raising a tobacco-free generation”, The Guardian writes.
The Indian Ocean archipelago has banned smoking for anyone born after January 2007, making it the only country to impose a smoking ban for an entire generation, according to the health ministry. The measure, launched by President Mohamed Mouizzou earlier this year and coming into force on November 1, “will protect public health and contribute to creating a tobacco-free generation”, the ministry said.
“According to the new regulation, persons born on or after January 1, 2007 are prohibited from purchasing, consuming or selling tobacco products in the Maldives. The ban applies to all types of tobacco products and retailers are required to verify the age of customers before selling,” the statement said.
The ministry also said that the ban on the import, sale, distribution, possession and use of e-cigarettes and e-cigarettes applies to everyone, regardless of age. Selling tobacco products to minors is punishable by a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa (US$3.2 thousand), and use of e-cigarettes is punishable by a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa (US$320).
