The Black Reel Awards have announced the nominations for their 23rd annual awards ceremony.
Gina Prince Bythewoods The queen of womenabout the warrior women of Dahomey’s land and that of Ryan Coogler Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverabout a superhero from the fictional African nation of Wakanda and a memorial to Chadwick Boseman, is up to 14 nominations.
Two other films joined the double-digit nominations: MGMs To and A24s The inspection.
Independent studio A24 received 11 nominations across all categories. However, Amazon Studios received a record three nominations in the Outstanding Independent Film category. master, nanny and emergency. Perennial powerhouse Disney Studios received the most nominations of any studio with 15.
Viola Davis received her sixth Outstanding Actress nomination for her work in The queen of women, who became the most recognizable person in the actress category in the history of the Black Reel Awards (Bolts). At the same time, director Elegance Bratton received the most recognition for a creativity that year, with four Bolt nominations. Prince-Bythewood earns her fourth nomination for Outstanding Director and becomes the most recognized director in Black Reel Award history. Two of her previous films The secret life of bees and love and basketball led to victories.
Grammy and fashion icon Rihanna received two Bolt nominations in the Outstanding Original Song category for “Born Again” and “Lift Me Up.” Wakanda forever Soundtrack. For the first time in history, all the nominees in the Outstanding Original Song category were performed and written, at least in part, by women.
With an Outstanding Supporting Actor nomination for his work in Breaking, Michael K. Williams becomes the third person, along with Chadwick Boseman and Gloria Foster, to receive posthumous acting nominations at the Black Reel Awards.
