Stephen King shared his thoughts on HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry, a new prequel that expands the universe of his iconic 1986 novel It, reports the New York Post.
The best-selling author praises director Andy Muschietti, who directed both the blockbuster It movies and returns with his sister Barbara Muschietti for It: Welcome to Derry: “Andy Muschietti is a genius when it comes to scares. Some scenes will give people nightmares. I really like Welcome to Derry. There’s a lot of horror and surreal imagery. I especially remember the part with the pickle jars in the supermarket.”
As for Pennywise, King hinted that long-time fans of the series won’t be disappointed. Bill Skarsgård, who played the dancing killer clown in the 2017 and 2019 films, returns to the role in the new prequel series: “Pennywise is still pretty scary when he finally shows up.”
After explaining how the prequel series came about, the creators revealed that The Shining writer was involved in the prequel’s creation in a “very intelligent way”: “He doesn’t control everything we do, although he approves and reviews everything we show him. Of course, he doesn’t mince words when he doesn’t like something. But most of the time he seems very excited and open to creativity.”
It was previously known that the first episode of “It: Welcome to Derry” collected a record number of views.
