Tokyo came first. This city continues to surprise with its contradictions: neon skyscrapers and silent churches, unique street style and centuries-old etiquette. Japan’s capital is like a fever dream you don’t want to wake up from. There are more Michelin stars here than anywhere else in the world. It’s no surprise that this is one of the best gastronomic destinations in the world.

Another Japanese city, Kyoto, ranked second. Once this city was the capital of the empire. There are 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 shrines and more than 200 gardens. It is a living repository of classical arts and crafts where tradition continues to thrive. But the best entertainment in Kyoto is associated not only with the city museum, but also with the city of innovation: Bamboo harvested here helped Thomas Edison create filament for the first electric light bulb, and Japan’s first tram appeared on the streets of Kyoto.

Cape Town completed the top three. Here, rugged Table Mountain meets the great white shark-infested waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and stately colonial-era buildings rub shoulders with state-of-the-art structures. You could spend a day lounging on the beaches of the Mother City, but it’s definitely worth taking the time to visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, and learn about its complex history.
