Disney’s Tron: Ares, starring Jared Leto, failed at the box office

Disney’s sci-fi sequel “Tron: Ares” failed to meet expectations at the box office, collecting just $33.5 million from 4,000 theaters in North America over the weekend, Variety reported.

This is a weak start, even for a fifty-year-old franchise that has never been commercially successful. The problem is that Tron: Age cost $180 million, not counting the millions the studio spent on marketing. Overseas, “Tron: Age” didn’t fare as well, grossing another $27 million, bringing its total to $60 million through Sunday.

Tron: Ares is in theaters again, 43 years after the first Tron movie was released. The third film in the series follows Ares (Jared Leto), an intelligent computer program who begins to question the orders and guidance of CEO Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters) and ventures into the real world in search of Encom’s current CEO, Eva Kim (Greta Lee).

Meanwhile, recently “Tron: Ares” received its first reviews from critics.
