Diane Keaton, whose death was announced yesterday, left behind a huge creative legacy that cemented her status as one of Hollywood’s most respected actresses, with more than 100 roles in film and television.

Diane Keaton’s career took off in the late 1970s, when the actress was over 30 years old. In 1978, she received an Oscar for Best Actress for the movie Annie Hall. Keaton was subsequently nominated for the award in this category three more times. We’ve highlighted the five best roles from Diane Keaton’s film career.

I would like to start the selection with the legendary 1972 movie “The Godfather”. In Francis Ford Coppola’s groundbreaking gangster film, Keaton plays Kay Adams, a quiet, middle-class American who doesn’t know what she’s getting into when she marries into the Corleone family. Diane’s character becomes the second wife of Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino: “I auditioned for the role in The Godfather without having read Mario Puzo’s book of the same name or having any interest in anything like that, because all I did was audition. I needed to get a job.”

Next up is the aforementioned 1977 Oscar-winning “Annie Hall.” Woody Allen’s best comedy follows the ups and downs of the romantic relationship between comedian Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) and Keaton’s nightclub singer Annie Hall. AO Scott, film critic for The New York Times, called it “one of the funniest movies about romantic love.” Keaton won his only Oscar for his work in this film and stated that playing the role was “a piece of cake”.

Another important movie for Diane was “Red”, shot in 1981. In this epic drama about the role of two Americans in the Bolshevik Revolution, Keaton plays an ambitious and unpredictable woman named Louise Bryant, who leaves her husband and pursues radical journalist John Reed, played by Warren Beatty. This role earned Keaton her second Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Marvin’s Room (1996) is a coming-of-age drama directed by Jerry Zaks, based on Scott McPherson’s 1991 play. It follows the very different lives of two sisters: Lee, played by Meryl Streep, and Bessie, played by Diane Keaton. Bessie gave up her freedom to care for her sick father, and Lee effectively abandoned his family. After the sisters become estranged, the news that Bessie has leukemia leads to a heartbreaking family reunion. Keaton was once again nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.

We complete the selection with the painting “Love with or without rules” dated 2003. It’s a romantic comedy starring a middle-aged playwright, played by Keaton, and an aging bachelor with a penchant for younger women, played by Jack Nicholson, who later called him “the consummate comedic artist.” Keaton wrote in his memoirs that Love Without Rules became his “favourite film”, but he was certain it would fail. For this role, the actor was also nominated for an Oscar.
