The 55-year-old singer told The Drew Barrymore Show that as a high school student in Anaheim, California, she felt insecure about her appearance. Gwen Stefani attended the program to promote her new album Bouquet.
Explaining the inspiration for the song Pretty, the singer said: “I was looking at my life, all these photos, my physical and inner beauty. I was thinking about eighth grade and it was like I was looking in the mirror at the gym, like I was looking at myself, “Am I cute? I can’t tell.” You know when you’re trying to figure out when it’s cute or not, right?”
The No Doubt singer later explained that she looks at old photos to determine when she felt “most beautiful” and when she loved herself “the most.” The singer noted: “It was right at the moment when Blake started loving me” (Gwen Stefani is married to Blake Shelton – Note ed.).
“I wanted to write a song about this because when you first feel love, it reflects you. “You can see yourself in him,” said the star. A photo of Gwen during her school years was published in the Daily Mail.
Stefani previously described her relationship with Shelton, whom she met while she was a judge on The Voice, as a “miracle.” After a heartbreaking divorce from ex-husband Gavin Rossdale in 2015, she didn’t know how to move on. The singer felt protective of her three sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo, after the divorce.
