EXCLUSIVE: Canadian streamer Crave has cast Lauren Collins and Megan Follows in a six-part comedy short. My dead mother.
The series follows Emmy, a woman who questions her life choices three years after her mother’s death. It explores the complicated nature of grief through the filter of mothers and daughters.
Production began in Toronto with Follows (Anna of Green Facades, management) and Collins (Degrassi: The Next Generation, The pressure) Starring. The cast is completed by Rainbow Sun Francks (Very reliable), David Reale (The small team), Daniel Maslany (Murdoch secrets), Daniel Kash (Slasher) and guest star Matt Murray (In the dark).
The synopsis reads: “Emmy wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail after her mother died, she was just too busy. But now, three years later, her grief is catching up with her. As she questions her lipstick and her life choices, her late mother Fern comes into her life to speak her mind and tell her that red really isn’t her color. Even death did not stop Fern from being great. Emmy is trying to live her best life, but how do you let go of something that is so present?”
My dead mother comes from creator Wendy Litner and executive producer Lauren Corber of LoCo Motion Pictures, who created the show in collaboration with Crave parent company Bell Media and with participation from the Canadian Independent Production Fund, Ontario Creates and the Bell Fund. Corber and Litner have previously collaborated on international Emmy-nominated series Hot to buy a baby.
Blue Ant Media has international distribution rights. Litner is also an EP, while Chandler Levack (I like movies) direct.
Palmer Baranek is executive producer and Moe Rai is co-producer. For Bell, Kelsey-Ann Rattansey is production manager, Chris Kelley is senior production manager, Sarah Fowlie is production manager and original programmer; Rachel Goldstein-Couto is head of development and original programming. Carlyn Klebuc is executive director of original programming; Justin Stockman is vice president of content development and programming. and Karine Moses is Senior Vice President, Content Development and News.
