The romantic comedy Irresistible searches for the formula of love

It’s not just books that are back in school. Even with the series, things are moving! Proof with the release of Irrésistible on Disney +, a contemporary romantic comedy, directed by Camélia Jordana.

Irresistible and Camélia Jordana are two words that go very well together. What a brilliant idea that was launch the singer and actress in a romantic comedy! It is she who gives the series an extra soul. The story is set in the present day, in the realistic Paris of the 19th and 20th arrondissements. It changes usEmily in Paris ! We follow the love at first sight of Adèle, a successful podcaster, for Arthur (Théo Navarro-Mussy), a mathematician of love. Each in their own way, both are interested in the mysteries of romantic relationships.

The chemistry is immediate, but a surprising obstacle soon arises between them. Adèle realizes that she can’t get close to the person she likes without feeling sick, like having a panic attack and even fainting! After a few medical visits, the diagnosis was made. As a veteran of this battlefield that is love, our heroine suffers from post-traumatic stress related to her previous relationship. She thought she was over it, after making a podcast and writing a book about it. But the fact that she continues to maintain a certainly platonic, but still close, bond with Trésor, her ex and partner in their podcast company, perhaps doesn’t help…

Creator and showrunner ofIrresistible, Clémence Madeleine-Perdrillat, a pen much requested in recent years in the world of French series (Nona and her daughtersseason 2 ofIn therapy) offers a refreshing x-ray of modern romantic behavior. The series has fun with the obligatory passages of the romantic comedy genre: meet cute (the initial meeting), the bizarre circumstances that bring the two lovebirds together, the ending in the rain…

Beyond the decorum, we feel the screenwriter’s desire to honestly portray emerging romantic relationships, the awkwardness of the beginnings… Half rom-com, half drama Irresistible shakes the final image of fairy tales that we have been accustomed to for too long. For example, Arthur is married. Not a crazy situation, but a realistic and potentially jaw-dropping one that could have turned against our two heroes’ likability quotient. We can count on the talent of Clémence Madeleine-Perdrillat, on her feminine gaze, to bring nuance and perspective. Solène (Zoé Schellenberg), Arthur’s wife, is not portrayed as a victim and has her own narrative arc. She also knows that her relationship with Arthur is coming to an end.

The real concern is Adèle’s discomfort in her presence squash. This obstacle, well identified, reminds us that feelings are felt in our flesh. That love stories leave their mark, long after their official end. Irresistible is fascinating as it is a romantic comedy that tells us about breakups. That of Arthur and Solène, after a decade spent together, and that of Adèle and Trésor, poorly digested. Adèle’s PTSDwho finds himself having to manage very debilitating panic attacks at work, it also allows the topic of mental health to be discussed.

The showrunner is careful not to demonize any protagonist. And its gallery of supporting characters, a good barometer for gauging the quality of a romantic comedy, is a delight. From Zinedine Soualem to Marion Seclin, including the promising Salomé Dewaels, this captivating cast is flawless. We particularly appreciated the episode in which Adèle finds the softness of the family cocoon and in which we get to know Inès (Alicia Hava), her queer little sister, better.

The irresistible Camélia Jordana

Coincidentally, Irresistible deals with delicate topics such as mourning, breakups, anxiety… Yet, it is his imagination that takes everything in its path. Let’s think about the cinema of Valérie Donzelli (at The queen of apples and its heroine also called Adèle), but also a Love at first sight in Notting Hill, one of the rare American romantic comedies in which the two lovebirds sleep together. And then like Anna Scott Notting Hill, Adèle is a charismatic and independent female character, recognized in her field (the podcast environment, very well represented, to the point that the fictional show “Love’s Sickness” which mixes testimonies and scientific analyzes in the series, will make her the subject of a real and own podcast on Louie Media), while the male character is more in the background and displays a gentle masculinity.

Sunny and captivating, Camellia Jordana offers very good performance. It brings a dose of melancholy that gives even more charm and depth to this romantic crossover. We also love the show’s sweet theme song, “I stay calm,” which he performs. Irresistible It is aimed at both lovers and those going through a breakup. This cuddly, but not cutesy, series is perfect for welcoming the arrival of autumn.
