When Joss Whedon he made the 2015 Marvel film Avengers: Age of Ultron, was at the peak of his career. He came from the successes of the beloved TV shows he had created, Firefly AND Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He had made successful films at the box office Hut in the woods AND The Avengers, and no one had yet come out and talked about what an idiot he was. Things were going well. But he had run into a problem making the Avengers sequel that he hadn’t foreseen, and it foreshadowed something of a rut the studio would find itself in all these years later.
In an old interview with Buzzfeed News, Whedon talked about the problem he had with making a big-budget movie that felt like just part of an ongoing story, like an episode of a series.
“No matter how much you say, ‘Well, this is going to lead to terrible things in the future,’ in my film, it’s designed to be a complete experience. And if I don’t, if I do, ‘I didn’t take you on that journey. and I locked him out, fuck it. That’s the danger of this kind of serialized storytelling, which turns the cinematic experience into episodic TV. Because we have episodic TV, and now you don’t even have to “wait until you watch it, you can binge it. So to me that’s a terrible mistake.”
He laughed bitterly and added:
“Someone said, ‘Well, that was great preparation for the next step!’ at one of the test screenings and I died inside. [Marvel executives] they were like, ‘No! They always say it’s okay.’ I thought, ‘No, that’s the worst thing I could have heard.’ I want people to walk away feeling like they’re done.”
That’s just the nature of it Kevin Feige has built with the MCU. Movies mostly have an interconnectedness, and while it makes the whole watching process a lot of fun, it could hurt a movie on its own. I think that even though some of the films in the franchise suffered in their success, they all played a role in the overall story and I enjoyed the journey. While it wasn’t perfect as we changed the narrative between the filmmakers, they did a great job with continuity and I’m still invested.
What do you think of what Whedon said?
