1 in 2 patients would give up going to the dermatologist, but why?

According to a study conducted by Ifop for Sanofi in July 2023, waiting times inherent to dermatologist appointments are increasingly longer. One in two patients would even give up on having their skin problems treated.

Whether it’s checking moles, treating acne, removing a cyst or prescribing a treatment for a skin problem like eczema… Going to the dermatologist is essential. Unfortunately in the last ten years waiting times to see a skin specialist are twice as long. In any case, this is what a study carried out by Ifop specifies. On average, it would take more than 3 months for a patient to get an appointment. A worrying discovery, since according to the same survey, more than one patient in two would give up treatment for their skin problems due to the lack of an appointment obtained within a reasonable time. 73% of French people find it difficult to access the care provided by these specialists.

Why is it so difficult to consult a dermatologist?

The reason why it becomes difficult to quickly make an appointment with the dermatologist is simple: there are fewer and fewer, about 1,000 fewer than in 2000. Many of them also choose to turn to aesthetic medicine (more profitable) to carry out laser treatments, hyaluronic acid injections and peels, thus taking care of fewer and fewer patients to treat skin problems.

Another important point is geographical distance, which requires patients to have to change cities or travel outside their area in order to obtain a visit more quickly.

What is the right frequency of consultation?

It all depends on your skin, age and history. The regularity of consultations varies from one to three years depending on the profile. If an unusual lesion appears in the meantime, timely advice is obviously essential, especially when it comes to worrying moles. The earlier melanoma is treated, the greater the chance of recovery.

But what to do when your dermatologist is not available? To obtain emergency or crisis medical advice for people with inflammatory problems, an online consultation with a specialist is the best solution. The latter will be able to answer your questions, prescribe appropriate treatment and possibly recommend rapid treatment if this is your need. In all cases, consultation remains essential!

For your part, when was your last meeting?
