In Switzerland, 30% of the population has changed their habits thanks to Greta Thunberg

A new Swiss study highlights a causal link between Greta Thunberg’s climate mobilization and the evolution of the daily practices of the Swiss population.

On 8 September 2023, a study by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) revealed that 30% of Swiss people would have changed their habits following the awareness work carried out by the movement.” Friday for the future ”, founded by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Transportation and recycling use particularly transformed uses

The first areas affected by these changes are transport, consumption habits and recycling.

For example, about a third of respondents said they were more likely to look for alternatives to driving to work. They would also seek out local organic produce, eat more vegetarian dishes and choose holiday destinations closer to home to avoid flying. There have also been clear efforts to reduce plastic waste.

People already sensitive to environmental issues

The study was carried out in October and November 2019, immediately after the numerous climate strikes organized by the ” Friday for the future » by Greta Thunberg.

This is a digital survey, conducted among 1,206 people aged between 18 and 74 living in the French- or German-speaking part of the country. Although the sample is representative of the entire Swiss population in terms of gender and age, people with a higher level of education are overrepresented.

The study also highlights that people who made a change in their behavior were already sensitive to environmental issues and had a high level of education. But the awareness-raising work carried out by Greta Thunberg’s movement would still have allowed them to transform their ecological awareness into concrete actions.
