Special relationship: how to care for wool and cashmere

It is impossible to imagine the winter season without cozy sweaters, sweaters and cardigans. From year to year, designers present new versions of the basic wardrobe item, and urban fashionistas vividly capture all knitwear trends. Back in the time of Princess Diana, everyone dreamed of the legendary black sheepskin sweater (by the way, homages still pop up), Marilyn Monroe made the black turtleneck sweater a cult hit, and Harry Styles made JW Anderson multicolored. The most requested thing of 2020 is the cardigan.

Yes, a quality wool or cashmere sweater is a worthwhile investment and a great foundation for any look that will serve faithfully for more than a season. But, as always, there was a “but” here too. And it lies in the fact that knitted things need special care. Otherwise, you risk that your favorite sweater will “fall apart” prematurely.

That’s why we decided to punctuate the i’s today and devote the material to the delicate topic of how to properly wash and store cashmere and woolen items. We turned to the Monncashmere brand team and Ekaterina Nasurdinova, founder of the DADAknit brand, for help. We’ve put together seven tips to keep in mind.

Wool

How to wash?

If hand washing is recommended for the products, wash them in cold water up to 30 degrees. Use only a mild liquid cleaner that does not contain chlorine or bleach. But powders are better to refuse – they dissolve poorly, and grains can stick to the structure of knitwear. Do not use hair conditioner, it can cause excessive hairiness and feathering in the products.

By the way, you shouldn’t wash things made of wool too often. Sometimes just airing or steaming is all it takes to make them feel like new.

How is it dried?

Do not pull or twist the product by its arms during and after washing. Otherwise, the sweater may simply be deformed. First you need to squeeze out the water with your hands (but very carefully), and then put the thing on a towel and roll it with a little pressure so that the water is absorbed. It is not possible to hang-dry a knitted product again due to the risk of deformation. It is best to leave it on a flat surface, straighten it and give it its original shape.

How is it stored?

Store items that are folded or thrown on the hanger bar. But hangers and plastic bags are best avoided. For seasonal storage, store sweaters in textile leggings that allow them to breathe. To protect a valuable item from moths, you can also place a bag of lavender or a bar of lavender soap next to it.

What to do with hooks?

If you accidentally damaged a knitted product, put a puff on it, in no case do not cut the threads. Remove a small puff from the inside out with a hook or send it to the studio (DADAknit has its own product restoration service) for professional restoration of the product and returning it to its original appearance.

Cashmere

How to wash?

First of all, cashmere likes to be washed. Machine wash in cold water on a wool/silk cycle. Rotate no more than 700 revolutions. You can put your favorite sweater in a special mesh bag (available at all stores in the home goods aisle) so it hurts less in the drum. For washing, use only special liquid detergents for woolen or delicate fabrics, which can be found in any store.

But dry cleaners are best avoided. From the chemical treatment, the delicate fibers become thinner and thicker.

How is it dried?

You need to dry cashmere products in the same way as woolen products – in an unfolded horizontal position.

How to care?

And now we turn to the most important thing – care. Premium cashmere is a very delicate material and should be treated accordingly. Peeling (pellet) formation is a natural phenomenon as the yarn is twisted from the fluff. And if you are convinced that a cashmere product has not been stripped, it simply means that other fibers have been added to the yarn.

If you follow simple rules, you can avoid problems with lumps and preserve the appearance of your favorite clothes for as long as possible. First of all, cashmere products cannot be aged. After wearing it, “rest” the sweater for a few days and be sure to wash it after four or five uses. Secondly, try not to wear anything under outerwear with or without coarse lining. Thirdly, we should not forget that our favorite shoulder bags can also cause peeling on the product.
