I wasn’t the biggest fan of 2021 Mortal combat movie as it turned out to be quite disappointing. It started out great, but then fell apart from there. Regardless, it ended up being one of Warner Bros.’ most successful films.’ simultaneous film release experiment in theaters and on HBO Max.
Due to its success, the studio is developing a sequel and Mortal combat 2 star Lewis Tanwho plays Cole Young in the film, says she’s been “practicing [his] Butt out” for the new film. He also teased that the sequel will be “absolutely insane.” During an interview with CB, Tan was asked if Discovery’s acquisition of WB had an impact on the sequel, and this is what he said:
“Well, it has a big impact, but not really on us particularly because New Line is the studio under Warner Bros. But they are very happy with the movie and, obviously, it worked really well. seen of their Warner Bros. Slate, even if it came out at the worst possible time. But nope, we’re full steam ahead. And now we’ve got Ed Boon with us too, so we’ve gotten the stamp of approval from the legend himself. # 2 is going to be absolutely insane. Much bigger.”
So if you were a fan of the former Mortal combat movie, that comment will definitely get you pumped! The sequel was written by Jeremy Slaterwho was the head writer of Marvel’s Knight of the Moon series and also worked The Umbrella Academy series. There are no details on what the sequel will entail, but Slater shared his unique approach to the franchise saying:
“I feel like blood inside Mortal combat that’s awesome and that’s part of what people come for, you always have to find that balance between fun gore and gross gore, right? Because there are moments where you rip someone’s heart out or the best kill in the first movie is Kung Lao’s spinning hat cutting it in half and that’s the perfect example of funny gore because it’s gross but everyone laughs at the same time , right ? You want to make sure everyone is laughing at the blood kind of audacity and aren’t sitting there sort of grossed out by close-ups of dripping, visceral bowels and stuff like that.
“There’s an ironic aspect to Mortal combat in terms of violence and in terms of gore, there’s a little wink at the audience saying, “Yeah, we know it’s ridiculous, but it’s really funny and we’re all in on the joke.” Slater continued. “And when you strike the right balance, I think that’s where you get moments like that incredibly bloody first battle that opens the first soundtrack movie with Hanzo slaying all the assassins or you get the hat gag or stuff like that. So we’re trying to emulate those gory moments from the first one that were really, really successful and had huge audience reactions and how can we give the audience even more this time around.”
