Mark Hamill praises Mike Flanagan for his more unique role than ever in THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

Marco Hamill he may always be better known as Luke Skywalker, but one of his more recent collaborations with the horror master Mike Flanagan it gave him the chance to explore uncharted territory in his acting career.

On Netflix The Fall of House UsherHamill plays a character who is a soulless and amoral lawyer, and he credits Flanagan with giving him this rare opportunity.

Appearing on the Potlickin podcast, Hamill expressed gratitude for the role, describing it as unlike anything he’s ever done on screen.

Although he has played villains in his voice acting career, including his iconic portrayal of the Joker Batman: The Animated Seriesthis role was a significant milestone for his live work.

Hamill said: “It was the first time I got to do it [something like this]. I have always played atypical roles in voiceover. I mean, you play all these different gangsters and, well, like I said, a squirrel gangster. But this was the first time I got to do it in front of the camera. And I’m really grateful for that [Mike Flanagan].”

For decades, Hamill battled Luke Skywalker’s shadow, finding himself transformed early in his career. While his resume may seem diverse, ranging from science fiction to animation, his most innovative roles have largely been in voice work. Flanagan, however, saw beyond Hamill’s legacy as Luke.

The result was a chilling sight The Fall of House Usher this highlights Hamill’s versatility and willingness to take creative risks. It was fun to see him step into the shoes of a cold, calculating sociopath.

Hamill didn’t seek out the role, Flanagan approached him directly. The acclaimed director and screenwriter recognized untapped potential and gave him a role that redefined his career.

For Hamill, this opportunity was a professional milestone and confirmation of his talent. “I’m really grateful,” he remarked, reflecting on the faith Flanagan has placed in him.

Hamill will next be seen in Flanagan’s film adaptation of the Stephen King film The Life of Chuck. Flanagan praised Hammil’s performance saying:

“I just made a movie last fall that I’m very proud of, it has a really bizarre monologue played by Mark Hamill. It’s my favorite piece of acting I’ve ever seen from Mark Hamill, it’s four and a half minutes. It’s just… . Yes!”
