As you know, director Michele Baia he has an appetite for cinematic spectacle and nowhere is this more evident than in his Transformers movie.
When Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) revealed the initial design of the film’s gigantic villain, Devastator, for Transformers: Revenge of the FallenBay had only one request: “Make it bigger and more detailed.”
The visual effects team, led by ILM artists, accepted Bay’s request and ran with it. Second Rassoul Edjia VFX artist who recently shared insights behind the scenes of X, the team has doubled the size and complexity of Devastator.
The result was a mechanical monster composed of an astonishing 52,632 individual partspushing both creative and technical boundaries to the limit.
“Devastator was the largest creature ILM had ever made up to that point,” Edji explained. “It was so complex and so heavy that it melted a couple of ILM artists’ computers.”
It’s so crazy that these CGI effects were so massive that computers couldn’t handle them, so they just melted away.
To handle the enormous size of the beast: “ILM artists decided that the Devastator asset should be made up of multiple different structures, the two arms, the two legs, the torso and the head. Just like in the final film.”
He went on to share some fun facts about Devastator that you might find interesting and interesting:
-
It was more than 100 feet tall
-
It was composed of 52,632 individual parts
-
If laid out, all its parts would reach a length of 14 miles
-
The devastator’s hand travels at 390 miles per hour when it hits the pyramid
-
The pyramid destruction simulation was 8 times larger than the ILM’s previous largest rigid body simulation
The insane complexity of Devastator, Edji noted, was almost unprecedented. He revealed: “Devastator was the second most complex asset ever in the Transformers franchise, second only to Driller Bot by The darkness of the moon.”
He added: “Many of the projects I work on today are large-scale and complex, and in 2024 I still run into computing and data management challenges.
This gives me enormous respect for the work ILM did way back in 2008-2009 on this film. Truly amazing technical and creative ability!
