James Gunn officially ushered Batman into the DCU with a subtle but significant debut in the hit animated series Commando of creatures.
The most recent episode of the show features Gotham’s Dark Knight in just a dark look. While short, it’s a fun preview of the Caped Crusader’s place in the evolving DC Universe.
Gunn, who also directed the upcoming film Supermantalked about his approach to introducing Batman Commando of creatures before a full-fledged live-action release.
Gunn said: “When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more of Batman [Laughs]. I’d say, “I’m not ready to commit to that…more silhouette!” It’s a great way to show that Batman exists.”
Rather than rehash the character’s well-worn origin story, Gunn aims to establish Batman as a fully realized figure within the DCU.
He explained: “It already exists in this universe. Just like when we get to the Superman movie, we see that Superman already exists and is already known by the people of Metropolis. This is just the way to make it clear that Batman is part of this universe.”
While there’s speculation about who will don the DCU’s Bruce Wayne cowl, Gunn kept his answer about this Batman’s identity vague.
He said: “It’s Batman from the DCU. I love Batman. I’ve loved him since I was a kid. He’s one of my favorite characters… we’re going to do great things with him.”
Gunn’s enthusiasm extends to the possibility of a Superman team-up, teasing fans with:
“He’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him alongside Superman. And together…”
While you design how The brave and the bold AND Batman 2 are moving along slowly, Gunn’s strategic introduction of Batman Commando of creatures lays the foundation for exciting future developments.
With Clayface set to hit theaters next year, there’s growing speculation that it could present the perfect opportunity for the DCU’s Bruce Wayne to make a live-action appearance, even if only as a cameo.
