The developers of PAC-MAN wanted audiences to ask “What the fuck did they do to Pac-Man?” in the SECRET LEVEL

The first episodes of the anthology series of animated video games Secret level were released on Prime Video and one of the wildest episodes is the one involving Pac-Manwhich is titled “Circle”.

The creative team was really thinking outside the box when they developed that episode and turned it into an intense horror story. There is a reason for this, as the game developers wanted the audience to be taken by surprise.

During an interview with GamesRadar+, Secret levelis the executive producer Dave Wilson he said that this unique direction they took with the story came during a meeting with the developers.

Wilson explained: “We just took this and kind of gutted what Pac-Man should be. They challenged us, the developers. The developers got on a call with us and told us – look, this was a translator that it said this – “We would like the audience to ask themselves: what the fuck did they do to Pac Man?”

“So it’s not just our responsibility when the public watches it. But in that case, I think people have enough knowledge about what Pac-Man is that they can take a risk.”

Wilson said that many ideas were proposed for the Pac-Man episode, but one of them really stood out. “We had a lot of great ideas, but some of them were exactly what you would think a Pac-Man episode would be, and we kept feeling like we weren’t pushing the boundaries of what that is.”

JT Petty came up with the unique idea, and Wilson shared, “He came back with that script, and I remember clearly reading it saying, ‘I’m not quite sure I understand this, but I’m like, I should.'” I won’t understand all the episodes.

“It’s not all about me, it’s an anthology and, I have to say, the script was fantastic, but when we gave it to Victor [Maldonado] and Alfredo [Torres]the directing team called Headless, their speech was incredible.”

In the story, “a man (voiced by Alex Le) wakes up from sleep, suspended inside a tub of water. He has no memory of who he is or how he got there. Over email, Le compares this character to “an infant conceptually but with the motor functions and abilities of an adult.”

“All this character knows is that there’s some kind of spherical android floating in front of him (voiced by The Mandalorian‘S Emily Swallow). Puck, named after Pac-Man’s original nickname Puck-Man, claims to be “the Chosen One”, someone destined to escape the maze he is currently trapped in.

“Whether Puck can really be trusted or whether there is something more to this reality is a different question. Puck guides the man to a sword, which he uses to cut through the jungles and arid deserts of this world to find an escape route.

If you haven’t started watching Secret Level yet, you should dive in! So far from what I saw, it was amazing! I’m having fun.
