KRAVEN THE HUNTER Director JC Chandor Talks Creating an Evil Future

Kraven the Hunter is finally coming out in theaters this weekend, and I don’t know if you noticed, but the hype for the film is almost non-existent.

Director JC Chandor knows the odds are stacked against the film thanks to Sony’s previously released lackluster Marvel films. But regardless, he hopes audiences and fans will give the film a try.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant, he acknowledged the past failures of Sony’s Spider-Man universe.

“I’m not going to fool anyone into thinking that all those movies were the success that everyone wanted them to be. And so I got to watch that process and be a part of it.

“All I can control is that I try to make the best movie, cast the best people, create the best action scenes, create the best drama, create the best story that I am capable of making.”

He talked about the things he learned from his experience, saying, “We definitely learned some things, in a way that plays with that, which is, let’s not try to make this tell 16 different stories at once, right? Let’s make a really good movie in its essence and the end result will take care of itself.”

He continued: “I didn’t want to give away the details of what we had going on, but I think from a structural standpoint, it was about telling a movie that stands on its own and is certainly a Marvel movie that has the Rhino and has Stranger and has Chameleon and has Calypso.

“We put together this amazing group of characters that are certainly drawn from all of the lore and all of the canon.”

Chandor added: “I hope people are really excited about what we’ve done, but in a way, the movie can stand on its own and you can go into this movie knowing everything about everything and nothing, and it really will. I hope that works for you both ways.”

He went on to talk about the film’s story and teased that it will set up the evil future of Kraven The Hunter.

“We structured this movie as a classic origin story. If you know the plot of Kraven and take these things as seriously as we did and as we have, when the last frame of our movie comes, I think people will be thrilled that Kraven he’s ready to continue this journey into evil because that’s the heart of this character.”

“It doesn’t start the movie in that place. I think that’s what makes the movie really interesting, is that you get to see that journey, but this is a family saga that if anyone knows, if anyone knows Kraven’s Last Hunt and it I love it, it’s a place for me and Aaron, it was a hallmark of why we agreed to do this and created a character that over time it will make sense for him to end up there.”

Chandor is very proud of the film he made and it would be great if the film actually ends up exceeding expectations. I’ll try!
