Joe AND Antonio Russo they played a major role in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe and brought the Infinity Saga to a close in epic fashion with Avengers: Endgame.
Since then, Marvel Studios has struggled with the projects they’ve released and have let the quality of cinematography and storytelling slip. As of now, they are riding the success of Deadpool and Wolverine AND Agata always.
The Russo Bros. will return to Marvel to direct Avengers: Judgment Day AND Avengers: Secret Warswhich is a story they are very passionate and excited about telling.
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, they said they believe in the next two Avengers films will be “on an equal footing with Endless war AND End of games.”
Joe said, “Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had a chance of being on equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there was a core to a really explosive idea?”
Hopefully, all the Marvel films that precede those Avengers films will also end up being great, high-quality films that reach the bar set by many of the Infinity Saga films.
The Russo Brothers also reflected on their relationship with Robert Downey Jr.saying: “We are all very close. We were working on another project before Marvel approached all of us.
“So we’re working on another project with Robert – and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we were very excited about. Because it always has to be the story.
As you know, Downey Jr. will be returning to the MCU as the villain Doctor Doom, which is going to be wild.
The Russos previously spoke about returning to Marvel, saying: “You are the best fans in the world and we missed you.
“When we made Avengers: Endgame we really believed that this was the end of our journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We had put all the passion, love and imagination we had into Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and then culminated it all with Endgame.
“All in the space of a few years. We had spent everything we had creatively and left all our emotions on the floor. But since then, we started to feel like maybe there was a story where we could find a new narrative path to follow. It’s the reason we fell in love with comics in the first place. That story is Secret Wars.
“We can’t express how excited we are to dive back into this world and explore a character as delightfully complex as Victor Von Doom. And there is no better friend or collaborator to do it with, [than] THE big one [Robert Downey Jr.].
“Marvel Family, let’s do this…”
The screenplay by Avengers: Judgment Day was developed by Stephen McFeelywho previously co-wrote all of the Russo Brothers’ MCU projects.
Avengers: Judgment Day will be released in May 2026 with Avengers: Secret Wars will follow in May 2027.
