Batman will become the first superhero to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced that iconic comic book character Batman will be honored in a ceremony on September 26, becoming the first superhero to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

What began as eight stars installed on a modest stretch of sidewalk at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Gower St. in 1960 now stretches 1.3 miles in four directions, comprising 2,789 stars. Batman’s will be the 2,790th, and will be located at the prominent corner of Hollywood and Highland, across from the Guinness World Records Museum.

The ad read:

“The Dark Knight has been a symbol of determination, courage and justice to generations of fans for more than 85 years. Batman is recognized around the world through his portrayal in universally beloved comics, TV shows, cartoons and films,” and “he has transcended his history into one of the great American myths. He is vengeance. He is the night. He is Batman.”

Walk of Fame induction ceremonies are usually attended by famous co-stars and friends of the honoree. In this case, it’s DC chairman, publisher, and CEO Jim Lee and the company’s SVP and general manager Anne DePies.

Batman’s selection for this honor is significant for two reasons. First, he becomes the first superhero to receive a star on the Walk of Fame, a fact that will be recognized at the ceremony by Guinness World Records and reflected in the placement of his star. Second, he becomes only the twentieth fictional character to have his name permanently etched on a star on the Walk of Fame. He will join the likes of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Snoopy and the Muppets.
