A sequel series based on the hit show A different world (1987-1993) is in development at Netflix and is said to chronicle Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter’s time at Hillman College.
The half-hour single-camera comedy was crafted by writer/executive producer Felicia Pride (Bel Air, Anatomy of Grey) and executive producers Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bythewood.
A different world It was a spin-off of The Cosby Showand followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) and her new classmates at Hillman College, a fictional historically black college. Although Bonet left after one season, the show continued with the main cast of Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Sinbad, Charnele Brown, Cree Summer AND Glynn Turman.
The revamped second season continued to follow the lives of the students, centering on the romance between Guy’s Whitley Gilbert and Hardison’s Dwayne Wayne. Dwayne, famous for his ever-popular glasses, finally put a ring on them in the fifth-season episode “Save the Best For Last.”
Although Whitley was adamant about not wanting children, she discovers she is pregnant in “When One Door Closes,” the penultimate episode of the series, and everyone is elated. However, things take a dark turn when Dwayne reveals he has accepted a job in Japan, where he and his wife will raise their family, a world away.
The sequel will focus on the couple’s youngest daughter, who is now also dating Hillman, according to sources. While casting has yet to officially begin, we hear there have been conversations with original cast members regarding interest and availability, and the response has been positive.
A continuation of the series has been in various stages of development over the years, but has been put on hold for multiple reasons, including legal issues surrounding Bill Cosby, the creator of A different world.
The cast reunited earlier this year on Today AND The sight to celebrate A different worldimpact and ongoing legacy. In February, they kicked off a 10-city tour with stops at many HBCUs to encourage student enrollment.
Other noteworthy A different world Alumni include Marisa Tomeiwho made her TV debut in season 1, and Jada Pinkett Smithwho starred in the last two seasons at the beginning of his career.
