The Russian film industry is developing rapidly, but there are still topics and genres that studios for some reason avoid. And this “lack” of content is filled by foreign platforms. Russia produces a lot of fairy tales, detective dramas and historical films that are in demand regardless of the world situation, and producers are willing to invest in them. But what about other movies that need high-quality images? Moreover, there are now technical possibilities for this.
What films and TV series are missing from the Russian film industry? What content has the greatest potential to engage our audience and why?
We asked The Fashion Vibes film columnist and Telegram channel “Remizorro” Artem Remizov, who highlights the most exciting events in the global film industry every month and also shares new movies to save to your “Must See” list, to answer these questions.

Artem Remizov, The Fashion Vibes’s film columnist
Talking about what ingredients our film industry lacks is a thankless task for someone who is not part of this industry. Therefore, I think it would be right to say that I want to talk about this issue with you from the perspective of a viewer who loves cinema. The movie crowd is very sensitive and you don’t want to offend anyone.
Fear is in the eye of the beholder
The worst genre in our industry is, of course, horror. Yes, the situation has improved greatly in the last few years thanks to the Yakuts who have been making atmospheric films for minimal money. For me personally, this countdown began in 2020 with the release of Dima Davydov’s film “Scarecrow”. This was followed by wonderful short films, and in 2024 Evgeny Nikolaev’s film “Cuckoo” was released – a black and white mysticism, by the way, produced by Dima Davydov. Ruby fears are moving further and further in our industry; For example, this year Apollinaria Degtyareva’s film “Existence” entered the competition at the Mayak film festival.
But in my opinion, the genre needs more mainstream horror movies. For example, slasher movies, where everything happens in the modern world. A place where collective farm bloggers are not in the leading role, but where there are good artists, competent conclusions based on conclusions. Yes, there is already enough horror in the modern world, but still horror is an important part of world cinema and you cannot live without them.
Fantastic Beasts

Another no less lame genre is fantasy. It doesn’t matter which: science fiction or adventure. The last worthwhile mass-market project in the urban fantasy genre was Timur Bekmambetov’s “Hours.” Both films were moderately original, large-scale, star-studded, and reflective of the times in which they were released. Yes, Fyodor Bondarchuk tried to move in this direction when he released the “Attraction” duo, but we all remember that the first movie was drowned in pathetic scenarios and absurd scenario decisions, and the sequel, although it managed to surprise with graphics, turned out to be extremely boring.
Unfortunately, for some reason, most of our leaders decided that they could not fit into this segment and would just make up fairy tales. But you won’t get enough of them: after all, frivolous talent sometimes repels even fans of the genre. We can only hope that future projects, such as the series “Vegetation” based on the novel by Alexei Ivanov, will improve the situation.
Laugh and that’s enough
It’s been a long time since we’ve had great comedies at our box office; It’s not a remake of classics that isn’t full of sexist jokes. Often the humor in such projects is connected with situations where “someone got up at the wrong time”, and the development of the characters, their awareness of something does not matter at all.
At least in some way, romantic comedies try not to follow the same model. In the 2000s, I successfully turned to humor in the movie “Love in the City”. This year, director Dasha Lebedeva tried to do the same thing by filming the uneven but at least not vulgar romantic comedy “Making You Crazy.”
What about online?

I have said many times that online cinemas have made so much progress in the last few years that there is actually a diversity of content out there. Yes, sometimes it focuses on the ’90s because everyone wants to grab as much money as Wink made by showing a series about boys fighting in the streets.
And yet… I really want to see a big multi-season adventure story. The heroes will go from point A in the first season and reach point B in the third season, simultaneously examining the world, themselves and the people around them. Our series lacks a grand journey to another world, or rather the opportunity to briefly escape from the nightmares of the real world. Yes, Kinopoisk tried to do something similar in Eterna, but let’s be honest; Who remembers that this series aired this year? The trip turned out to be very uninspiring.
The result of all my loud speeches is the same: the content must be diversified and, most importantly, from the heart.
