Approximately 60 investigators are searching for the group that carried out the robbery in broad daylight. Paris prosecutor Laure Becquo told RTL television that the museum curator estimated the damage to be this amount, but that the thieves would not have made so much money if they had had “the very bad idea of melting down these jewels.”

Detectives scoured CCTV footage around the Louvre and on major roads outside Paris to find the four robbers who fled on scooters on Sunday morning. A report by the French Court of Auditors covering the period 2019-2024 found “consistent” delays in improving the Louvre’s security. Only a quarter of one wing was under video surveillance.

The thieves broke into the museum around 9.30am on Sunday, 30 minutes after it opened. They parked a truck with a retractable ladder, the kind used by movers, under the museum’s Apollo Gallery, climbed inside and used a cutting tool to go through the window and open the display cases.

Meanwhile, Pavel Duro said that he was ready to take back the jewels stolen from the Louvre.
