Netflix has released a new trailer for its fantastic anime series Terminator Zerowhich will continue to explore the Terminator franchise in a new and fresh way. This trailer gives us our best look yet at the story and I can’t wait to watch it!
This project will serve as a soft reboot of the franchise and is set immediately after Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The story is set in 2022, “A future war has been raging for decades between the few human survivors and an infinite army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet has gained self-awareness and begun its war against humanity.
“Trapped between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who is working to launch a new artificial intelligence system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity.
“As Malcolm grapples with the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by a relentless assassin from the future who will forever change the fate of his three children.”
The creator and showrunner of the series is Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, Batman II), and previously said that the series will have the same kind of sci-fi-horror vibe as the original film, and that definitely shows in this first trailer.
He said: “There’s a completely valid version of the Terminator franchise where the Terminator is synonymous with Jason and Freddy, where he’s this relentless serial killer. There’s a little bit of Friday the 13th in there. There’s a little bit of Michael Myers in there.”
Tomlin also said that the series will have the “serial killer” vibes of the original 1984 film.
The series has a fantastic cast that includes Timothy Oliphant like Terminator, Rosary Dawson like Kokoro, “an advanced artificial intelligence and Japan’s answer to Skynet. If brought online, Kokoro will be equipped with the same power as Skynet.”
Anna Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, MASS) has joined the cast and will play The Prophet, “the philosophical guide of the human resistance, a light that guides the survivors in the darkness of the unknown future that awaits them.”
Other new cast members include André Holland (Moonlight, The Knick) as Malcolm Lee, “a brilliant computer programmer and father of three, plagued by prophetic nightmares about an apocalyptic future.”
Then, there is Sonia Mizuno (The Dragon’s House, Crazy Rich Asians), who will voice Eiko, “a resistance fighter sent back in time to stop Malcolm from launching Kokoro.”
The series will debut on Netflix on August 29.
