Ethan Hawke will be the protagonist of the next film The last of the tribea jungle thriller set in the Brazilian Amazon.
Hawke will play William Phelan, “a washed-up Chicago cop turned corporate mercenary who finds himself in a wildly unfamiliar landscape tasked with killing the last surviving member of an uncontacted indigenous tribe.”
The film’s story is described as that of “a broken man who finds himself at an unlikely crossroads, Phelan is given the chance to save a life and reclaim his soul”.
The last of the tribe will be directed by Claudio Borrelli (Vultures), and the film is based on the book of the same title by former Washington Post journalist Monte Reel.
The film is said to be “truly global and extremely relevant” and points out that the last member of the Tanarus tribe died in 2022 by murder.
The screenplay was written by Marco Bailey (Fall, The Volcano), and is produced by Fernando Meirelles (The Two Popes, City of God) AND Ed Saxon (The Silence of the Lambs, adaptation).
Meirelles said in a statement: “In this week when southern Brazil is engulfed by the worst tragedy the country has ever experienced, Petrobras, the state oil company, plans to explore for oil in the Amazon.
“A film about prioritizing commercial interests over the conservation of the world’s largest forest couldn’t be more urgent.”
Hawke will be joined by the indigenous Brazilian actress-model Zaya Guarani, born in Port Velho in the Amazon. Guarani was seen Darren Aronofsky’S Postcard from Earthand the environmental activist has used her visibility as a model to promote her work advocating for indigenous peoples.
