Scientific Director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center Roman Vilfand warned that an abnormally cold winter may begin in the coming years. Despite the general warming trend and the rarity of severe frosts, the possibility of extremely cold periods remains.

Vilfand told TASS that it is almost impossible to predict the weather more accurately than two weeks out. He reminded that January 2024 in Moscow was unusually cold, with frosts as low as minus 25 degrees, and January 2025 was already extremely hot. The scientist emphasized that “in principle, it is wrong to conclude that there will be no cold winter in the coming years.”
The meteorologist explained that the cause of the cold may be a phenomenon known as “ultrapolar invasion”. It occurs when an anticyclone from the Arctic moves into temperate latitudes and causes severe frosts, sometimes leading to extreme consequences.
Vilfand also noted that the frequency of such processes has decreased significantly in the last 30-40 years, but they cannot be completely ignored. Although the rarity of such events has increased, the possibility of extreme cold temperatures remains as in the past.
By the way, we have previously written about how to get through the 176 days of winter and stay productive. Read more here.
