Early concept art for KPOP DEMON HUNTERS reveals a completely different visual style for the Netflix hit

Before KPop Demon Hunters became the colorful and energetic animated hit that took Netflix by storm, it seems like the movie was very different. Some early concept art has resurfaced online, giving fans a look at a much edgier version of the film’s world and its demon-hunting K-pop idols.

In February 2024, VFX artist Matthew McDonald shared the artwork on Twitter, writing, “Extremely excited about the next project I work on…”

The image shows the Hunter/x trio, which includes Rumi, Mira and Zoey, from behind as they perform on stage in front of a huge crowd, with their demon-slaying weapons cleverly hidden behind them.

Hovering above the stage, sinister Honmoon demons peer through a bright, colorful barrier. The girls sport sharper, more angular designs and markedly different hairstyles than what we see in the final film.

The final version of KPop Demon Hunters follows Rumi, Mira and Zoey voiced by Arden Cho, May HongAND Ji-young Yooas they navigate life as a chart-topping idol while secretly battling demonic forces that threaten the world. Their voices are more than just a musical weapon; they are the key to sealing evil itself.

Since its release last June, KPop Demon Hunters has absolutely dominated Netflix. It’s now the streamer’s biggest film ever, surpassing Dwayne Johnson’S Red warning amassing a staggering 325.1 million views during its 91-day tracking window.

If you haven’t joined the hype yet, KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix, and judging by this early concept art, it’s incredible to imagine how different the film could have looked.
