James Gunn recently shared pieces of Superman the media inspired his portrayal of the iconic DC superhero. When a fan on social media asked him what his inspiration for Superman was, aside Richard DonnerThe classic 1978 film, Gunn responded with a collection of images.
The first image is from Superman #1 in 1939. The rest of the assembled images feature Superman’s long history in comics, shows, and other media. I’ve included the discussion post below along with all the images Gunn shared.
Looking at all these images that inspired Gunn, it’s more proof to me that Gunn is the right person for the job of taking on Superman.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
