Daniel Day Lewis he retired from acting in 2017 after performing Paul Thomas Anderson’S Ghost thread, and in case you’re wondering if he might come out of retirement, the answer is no. His director and long-time collaborator Jim Sheridan confirmed that the actor is serious about his retirement and that he is “done with acting.”
Sheridan directed Day-Lewis in films such as My left foot (1989), In the name of the father (1993) e The Boxer (1997). During an interview with ScreenDaily, Sheridan said:
«He says he’s finished. I keep talking to him. I would love to do something with him again. He’s like everyone else. He opens the streamers and there are seven thousand choices, none of them good. The film has been moved from the public domain to the private domain: if you have a remote control, you can stop it. It’s not the same experience. It would be great to see Daniel come back and do something because he’s so good.
I would love nothing more than for Day-Lewis to star in a big movie again. Also Martin Scorsese he hopes to direct it again one day, but that probably won’t happen. The director said at the time: “We made two films together. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, I have to say. Maybe there’s time for one more.
When the actor initially retired, a spokesperson said: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer work as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all his collaborators and the public over these years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make further comment on the matter. “
Reflecting on his decision later in a previous interview, Day-Lewis said that “before doing [Phantom Thread]I didn’t know I would stop acting.
As for why the actor withdrew and the statement he released, he said: “I knew it was unusual to release a statement. But I wanted to draw a line. I didn’t want to get sucked into another project. My whole life I did nothing but talk about how I should stop acting, and I don’t know why this time was different, but the urge to stop took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do.
He definitely misses him because there are very few actors in Hollywood who are as talented as Day-Lewis.
