Once upon a time, a single name in the credits could guarantee box office success. However, this season, even Hollywood’s brightest stars could not attract the audience to the cinema. Margot Robbie, Dwayne Johnson, Julia Roberts, Keanu Reeves, Emily Blunt, Colin Farrell and Channing Tatum pitched new projects, but none of the films were hits.

Critics note that audiences are tired of big names and don’t go to the movies just for the stars. Even movies with strong casts like “Big Brave Beautiful Ride” or “After the Hunt” performed poorly. The only exception was Leonardo DiCaprio, whose drama “Battle After Battle” collected nearly $200 million worldwide. But the result has also been called a “modest success”, with a blockbuster budget and rave reviews.
Celebrity failures forced Hollywood to think: Audiences are responding less and less to names and more and more to brands. Previously, it was the stars who could provide the minimum interest in the film, even if the plot was not the strongest. Now audiences are more willing to watch series and sequels rather than original stories featuring famous actors.
According to analysts, for an “old-fashioned” movie without superheroes and effects to at least somehow pay off, everything needs to coincide – excellent reviews, viral trailers and lack of competition. But even under these conditions, stars can no longer guarantee box office success. “The audience has become too smart to pay to see beautiful people on the screen,” critics write.
Interestingly, the cult of personality has not disappeared anywhere. Now it has moved online: the younger generation admires bloggers and influencers, not actors. Streaming services understand this and continue to pay stars huge fees, luring them into TV series and mini-movies.
By the way, we previously wrote that a popular TV series star in Hollywood was kicked out of the project on charges of sexual violence.
