Kirsten Dunst she began her career as a child actress in hit films such as Interview with the vampire, Little WomenAND Jumanji. She has acted in teen films such as Take it AND Crazy/Beautiful. She went on to make many more films and shows, including an incredible season of Fargoand the movie The power of the dogwhich earned her an Oscar nomination, but to many comic book fans, Dunst will always be known as our first Mary Jane Watson of Sam Raimi-direct Spiderman films that introduced us to that world on the big screen.
While Dunst has found her balance now, feeling deeply about the roles she chooses for herself, when she played Mary Jane, she wasn’t so comfortable. Dunst told Marie Claire, “I mean…” she exhales, pauses, then starts speaking more softly than before. “It was a joke, but let’s move on Spiderman, sometimes they called me “girly-girl” on the walkie-talkie. ‘We need girl-girls'”—she imitates the cloying tone—”but I never said anything.” The memory inflames her a little—”like, don’t call me that”—but she quickly recovers. It’s time to realize the her self-esteem, especially as a young woman in pre-MeToo Hollywood. “You didn’t say anything,” she says, downplaying it. “You just took it.”
Every woman has a story about how she felt uncomfortable before she could speak up for herself. Fortunately, Dunst appears to have gained the ability to assert herself, and perhaps that’s part of what came across in her performance in Fargo. I can’t wait to see what Dunst does next.
