With Wake Up Dead Man: A Mystery at Knives Out will be released in cinemas soon, Ryan Johnson he’s already looking ahead and his next film will take him back to his sci-fi roots.
THE Knives out AND Star Wars: The Last Jedi the director revealed that his next project will dive into a new blend of genres, channeling the atmosphere and tension of the ’70s. Speaking about his next film with Empire, Johnson shared:
“If I had to define it in terms of genre, I would say it harks back to the paranoid thrillers of the 70s. It has a slight sci-fi element.”
That touch of “light sci-fi” may not be on the level of Star Wars, but Johnson doesn’t close that door either.
“That gear will turn the rest of my life. I love Star Wars, and if it makes sense to go back someday, for both of us, it would be the most wonderful thing in the world.”
It looks like this new story will bring together two of Johnson’s favorite playgrounds, namely mystery and science fiction. Before reinventing the mystery genre with Knives outhas made a brilliant, cerebral time travel thriller Loopers.
Most recently, his Peacock series Poker facehero Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, he also dabbled in mystery fiction. Johnson said of Charlie’s uncanny ability to tell when someone is lying:
“It’s definitely superhuman in the sense that it’s beyond reality in terms of what humans can do, but it’s also something that’s strangely plausible. So if that means you’re going to talk about it on io9, I think. Yes, it’s absolutely [a superpower].”
Considering his track record, fans are already guessing whether Johnson’s “light science fiction” project could somehow connect to Poker Face because its nostalgic ’70s energy and detective narrative wouldn’t be a bad idea. Whatever happens, Johnson seems completely energized by it.
“The most exciting thing right now is the idea I have in my head for the next thing I’m going to do, and I think in the end, all you can do is just follow your nose.”
Before Johnson dives into the new project, audiences will return to the world of Benoit Blanc when Wake Up Dead Man: A Mystery at Knives Out will be released in select theaters on November 26th and will arrive on Netflix on December 12th.
Whatever Johnson is cooking up for his next film, it’s safe to say we’re in for something unique, with his sharp, strange and funny storytelling style.
