Anne Hathaway says it’s lucky her BARBIE movie didn’t get made because Margot Robbie’s film was the ‘best possible version’

Oscar winner Anne Hathaway had a Barbie movie in the works a while back, in which she took on the lead role Amy Schumer, who abandoned the project. Hathaway’s film follows Barbie as she gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and ends up on a real-world adventure. The project never materialized, which opened the door to Margot Robbie acquire the film rights to the doll and bring the project to Warner Bros., bringing it to success this summer, Barbie.

Hathaway explained on a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that it was lucky her movie didn’t get made, as it left the door open for the amazing movie we ended up with. She continued to rave about the film, saying:

“What’s so exciting about what Greta, Margot and that phenomenal team? [did] they hit the target. The target made the whole world reach this level of ecstasy. Now imagine that version… so much energy, so much anticipation, so much emotion… but it’s not the right version. I actually consider it a lucky thing [it didn’t get made].”

Hathaway continued:

“Margot is sublime. What she is doing as a creative person and producer is so exciting and inspiring. The mythical giants with whom they were defeated [‘Barbie’] that have kept certain narratives in place that have not allowed the development of opportunities for so many people… they have met it! Just as a moviegoer and woman in Hollywood since I was a child, I am excited about the development. If I believed the version I was fond of could have done it, I might think differently, but I honestly think their film was the best possible version. It’s easy to just be excited and happy [for them]. I love watching women kill it. To do so well, so undeniably that we have to write new records… come on! I think it will probably make things better.”

Hathaway has no regrets that Sony’s iteration of the “Barbie” movie never got off the ground, nor does she regret any of the career opportunities she missed.

“You learn to just go… the right role finds the right person, and sometimes it’s you and sometimes it’s not. When that doesn’t happen, trust more deeply and move on… it may sound corny, but you really need to be grateful.

That’s a fantastic attitude. It’s pretty crazy to think about all the projects that come and go and evolve behind the scenes that we never know the details of. This was one of the times when everything went right.
