Following the lead of many other award groups, Film Independent is gender neutral for its Independent Spirit Awards.
The organization said Tuesday that it is moving away from the traditionally male and female main and secondary categories for film and television and is instead combining them into 10 nominations for Best Leading Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The same goes for the television categories for Best Lead Actor in a New Scripted Series, as well as the newly added award for Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series. Additionally, a third film category, Best Breakthrough, is added but is limited to five nominees.
