Marvel has released the first official look Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and the first official image shared via Entertainment Weekly features Charlie Cox dressed as Matt Murdock once again.
The lighting in the image is drenched in red, obscuring some details, but you can make out the faint “DD” logo on his chest. From what we have seen in the photos from the set, however, we know that it is a new black dress, inspired by the plot of the Shadowland comic.
While Brad Winderbaum didn’t go into detail about the new costume during his interview with EW, he confirmed who the newcomer will be Matthew Lillard is playing the game, and it looks like it’s going to make things even more difficult for both Daredevil and Fisk.
“He plays a character called Mr. Charles. The story is about power. When Wilson Fisk takes control of New York, not just as mayor but in a sense as king, it puts him in a new class of powerful players on the international stage.
“Matthew Lillard’s character represents just that. So he’s a bit of a new antagonist on the field, but he’s as influential in many ways as Fisk is. That negotiation of power at a very high level of international politics and diplomacy is fun to watch as well.
“He’s dealing with Mr. Charles up here and Daredevil down here for different reasons. So he gets squeezed a little bit.”
After the intense events of the first season, which ended with Vincenzo D’OnofrioAs Wilson Fisk declares martial law with his anti-vigilante task force, season two will see Matt Murdock mobilize his own resistance.
His team was short of big hitters last time out, but fans will be thrilled to know that Kristen RitterJessica Jones is ready to join the fight.
And what about Luke Cage? This is a question many people ask and Winderbaum doesn’t say a word.
“The less I say the better, Dario [Scardapane, showrunner] is trying to tell a powerful story that is, as Stan Lee said, a reflection of the world outside your window. New York politics is a big part of that story.
“It’s clearly about a guy walking around dressed as a devil, but what’s amazing about Dario’s work is the complexity of the interaction of all these characters and how it really deals with New York and the world of City Hall and the rising tide of resistance against Fisk.
“Sometimes it feels like a fantasy epic or Game of Thrones or something. There’s a palace intrigue-style narrative that’s really fun to read. I’m starting to watch the edits. It’s amazing.”
“So I don’t know if it’s about exactly who’s going to show up. It’s a little deeper than that. There are rewards for the fans, but it’s really about the stakes of this world that this Kingpin is building in New York City.”
The next season of Daredevil: Born Again promises a darker tone and a deeper exploration of power, corruption and redemption. As Fisk consolidates his grip on New York’s political machine, Murdock’s double life, lawyer by day and vigilante by night, becomes even more dangerous.
Alongside Cox and D’Onofrio, the series features Margherita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabrina Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michele Gandolfini, Ayelet ZurerAND Jon Bernthal.
Dario Scardapane serves as showrunner, with episodes directed by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Michele Cuesta, Jeffrey NachmanoffAND David Boyd.
