A new clip from the Beetlejuice sequel finally revealed the secret about the protagonist’s death.

More than thirty years later, the sequel to Tim Burton’s fantasy horror film Beetlejuice is coming out, and it’s likely to delve deeper into the story of its most interesting character. The two-minute video, which surfaced online ahead of Beetlejuice’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, has finally revealed the truth about how Beetlejuice actually met his wife Delores, played in the film by Monica Bellucci, and how he became a powerful genie as a result.

In the video, Beetlejuice gets nostalgic for the old days, telling the audience that during his life he was a grave robber in an Italian town during the bubonic plague. During the subsequent “cleanup” of one of the graves, Beetlejuice met Delores, who introduced herself as a doctor treating the plague.

The couple quickly find a common language and get married just as quickly – only a short time later Beetlejuice realizes that Delores, who is actually a fan of the cult, has deliberately poisoned him in order to gain immortality. However, the heroine immediately gets her share of revenge: the dying Beetlejuice murders his wife with an axe. This subsequently explains why Delores exists in the afterlife with a huge scar on her face.

The short video also gives a hint as to how Beetlejuice came to his power – he was apparently a follower of the same cult as Delores during his lifetime, and the latter’s death robbed her of any opportunity to possess Beetlejuice’s soul.

However, to fully understand the whole story, it is still better for viewers to wait for the premiere of the sequel – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters on September 6.
