Angelenos looking to open their presents by a roaring fire on a cold Christmas morning this year are out of luck. The weather is cold enough, but local air quality officials have issued a ban on burning on Christmas Eve in non-desert parts of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties
all of Orange County.
Fortunately, we have the internet and there are a wealth of virtual options.
The original is of course this WPIX Christmas Protocol, a three-hour loop of a 17-second film about a burning fireplace in Gracie Mansion, the New York City mayor’s residence, which first aired on Christmas Eve 1966. For those in the tri-state area, the station will air the 1970s version of its Yule Log on Christmas Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For those who want the 1966 original, WPIX will air the footage from 4 to 5 p.m. It can also be streamed here in the same windows.
A YouTube version of the 1970 footage is embedded below.
One of the most popular options is Netflix Fireplace for your home. The presentation first launched in 2011 and includes three episodes of the fireside created by George Ford, now available to watch in vivid 4K Ultra HD. The three original 60-minute videos offer a slightly different vibe: Cracking Yule Log Fireplace with music like “Joy to the World” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”; Crackling fireplace, which avoids music; and crackling fireplace with music, for a more neutral mood. Stream it here.
DC has created its own Christmas fireplace 10 o’clock Christmas Fireplace with a fire lit by Superman. Look below.
If you have Roku, there is one Yule log channel, which contains both a Christmas log and holiday offerings in the public domain. Look here.
Until December 31st, Spectrum TV customers looking for a fun holiday atmosphere can find it at the Holiday Yule login on request Category. The Yule Log category is free to Spectrum Video customers and features eight channels of bubbly seasonal atmosphere, including festive fireplaces, warm piano sounds and presents under the tree.
The Hallmark Channel, known for its Christmas shows, has posted a holiday log online.
