Sarah Snook, star of Successionsays the film industry needs to “set a precedent” with new rules for the use of artificial intelligence.
Regarding the ongoing SAG-AFTRA dispute, where AI remains one of the main sticking points, Snook told the BBC:
“It’s such an unexplored landscape.” We need strict regulations to protect not only the acting industry, but the entire industry.
“If we can set a precedent for other industries in the way AI is used, that would be huge. All the deep fake stuff that’s readily available is scary. The guy who makes the Tom Cruise videos is creepy.
“Imagine a company that owns your image and your voice and does propaganda. There are no words to describe how important it is to pay attention now.”
Snook said she supports the strike and that it didn’t work helped her deal with the huge downturn after the strike’s huge success Succession which was completed at the beginning of the year.
Snook will play all 26 characters Dorian Gray’s picture next year on the British West End stage.
The story is about a young man who has a portrait of himself painted. While the portrait does not age, Snook spoke about the relevance of Oscar Wilde’s Victorian drama in modern times, reflecting:
“It’s just like Instagram now. We take pictures of ourselves, we put filters on ourselves. We are constantly trying to maintain this image of the present, but we are now also shaping the future. There’s a sense of celebration of youth that desperately clings to you, I think that’s what Wilde was talking about.
She added: “I’m very quiet on social media, I think it’s a scary landscape.”
Asked if she missed them Succession Character Shiv, she laughed. “No, she looks nothing like me. It’s a lot of fun to play, but I’m happy to put them on the shelf, let it go.”
