Fran Drescher can certainly take a joke. In a Happy Halloween post on Instagram, Drescher praised Saturday Night Live“Treat or Treat with Fran Drescher,” which mocked the SAG-AFTRA president for her infamous Halloween policy banning members from wearing costumes from studio films and live-action TV series during the actors’ strike.
“Happy Halloween! Did you see President Drescher’s sketch on SNL? Gr8 timing and strike support. Ty SNL ????,” Drescher wrote. See her post below.
In the sketch, Drescher is played by SNL‘s Sarah Sherman, sent kids home in costumes that promoted “battered” television/movie works like Barbie, Spider-Man and Black Panther, or suggested “minor modifications” that would make each costume vulnerable. Example: If you’re dressed as Wolverine, “just drop your claws and wah-lah, you’re a gay man over 50.”
The sketch turned into a Halloween version of the studio conversations that showed signs of progress, mocking people who pretend not to be at home when trick-or-treaters call, instead sitting inside and ” billions.” shouts from Kit” to spend on food. Kathek.”
“Negotiating with the studios is like trick-or-treating,” said Sherman (as Drescher). “You know how you go to the biggest house in the neighborhood and all the lights are off and they pretend they’re not home? But you can see them through the window eating Kit Kat bars, dozens of Kit Kat bars , billions of Kit Kat bars, a record number of Kit Kat bars What all of our actors are saying: break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar.
The sketch received positive reactions. Most felt he supported the strikers, but one SAG-AFTRA member was displeased. Everyone loves Raymond Actor Brad Garrett wrote on Instagram: “It’s so scary that @officialfrandrescher, our SAG/AFTRA president, thinks this SNL skit is ‘pro-strike’ when it’s actually the opposite.”
“It makes her look like an idiot and out of touch, which is the point and accuracy of the parody. But she doesn’t understand,” Garrett explained. “This is the person responsible for the most important contract in the history of our union?! While they and the incompetent committee are slowly negotiating, 90% of the industry is in unprecedented trouble. Wake up the damned people.”
Meanwhile, sources on both sides tell Deadline that the guild and the AMPTP are planning further discussions today, with further consultations later in the week if necessary.
